To protect internal peace

Dr, Amer Al Sabaileh

Two major issues made the Washington meeting between King Abdullah and President Barack Obama exceptional for Jordan.
One is the critical timing of the summit, which came after the announcement of the Syrian truce, brokered by US and Russia.
The other is the fact that it came after the US administration passed a law that increases military support for Jordan to $450 million this year.
Jordan thus positions itself as an important country for the international community, especially Russia and the US, and it is, considering its many critical concerns: dealing with the Syrian crisis, fighting terrorism, containing the refugee issues, working on a political settlement in Syria and the pending peace process.
Jordan has dealt exceptionally with the huge pressure. However, it will have to consolidate and protect its position vis-à-vis these crises in the future, while setting a national policy that preserves state institutions and protects the country from any internal disputes.
Jordan should try to keep communication lines open with all parties to the conflict in Syria, for its strategic interests make it incumbent on it to play a key role in any future scenario.
Three different issues need to be carefully considered: the inevitable consequences of any Syrian settlement; a possible escalation of the situation in the West Bank and developments regarding the two-state solution, which might negatively affect the internal situation; and the fight against terrorism.
The biggest challenge is to stop the fight of all terrorist groups close to the Jordanian border and make them give up their weapons. If this attempt fails, will Syria’s neighbours become a direct target of these groups?
The risk is not just terrorist-style attacks on civilians, but also spreading the seeds of sectarian conflict, along religious and ethnic lines, in the whole region.
Jordan should worry about these organisations because many of their members are Jordanians. The terrorist organisations fighting in Syria pose a serious threat to Jordan because they embrace the old Al Qaeda doctrine, which considers Jordan a target for their attacks.
Jordan needs to adopt precautionary tactics to prevent any possible confrontation on its borders.
