Abstract

This study highlights the Status of the Arabic Language in West Africa between the past and the present, as it identifies the challenges facing Arabic language learners in the region, and then suggests some solutions and proposals on how to tackle those challenges, it can be pointed out from here that the language of the Qur’an was an official language in some West African societies, a commercial language in the markets, and a religious language in its temples, it was even used in writing official letters amongst kings and visitors to the region. Arabic language was an official language in many regions in West Africa until the arrival of the colonization from Europe. The researcher will be highlighting the conflict between foreign languages in West Africa, in addition to suggest some proposals in the favor of Arabic language on how to remain used by many in the region. Amongst the objectives of this study is that it seeks to identify the most important challenges facing the Arabic language in the region, and to clarify the role of Latin languages (English and French) in those challenges, as the paper aims to put forward some proposals based on its results .The writer has used the Analytical method, the inductive approach and the experimental method; whereby the researcher relays on information and notes from other researchers in same area, and that is due to the lack of references in the subject, as known the nature of this study requires tracing the reality on ground, and then analyzing it, therefore, the researcher relays on his experience and the situation he had lived or heard from other researchers in African issues .One of the most important results of this study is that the Arabic language was in a good status before the arrival of colonization, as it was the official language in most regions of West Africa, another result is that there is a conflict between foreign languages (Arabic language and Latin languages) in West Africa, where Latin languages are mostly used more than the Arabic Language. One of the most important results is that the Arabic language is now facing challenges; one of which is the educational system, and the difficulty of integrating some of the Arabic language graduates into the government, and the reason is that, they do not know their country’s official language (French or English). The researcher has also found that with all these challenges, the survival of the Arabic language in the West African region is attached to Islam, therefore the Arabic Language will remains as long as Islam is in the hearts of the Muslim.
