Conference Preamble
Soft skills are key factors that significantly influence an individual’s success in both personal and professional life. With the increasing use of technology and digital transformation in all aspects of life, it is essential to consider how this transformation affects the development and enhancement of soft skills. Consequently, institutions and individuals in the digital age face many challenges in developing and improving soft skills, impacting their success in both their personal and professional lives. Among these challenges are
- Impact of Technology: The use of technology and digital transformation affects soft skills and how they are developed. Overemphasis on electronic devices and virtual communication can disrupt soft skills such as personal communication and social interaction.
- Continuous Change: Individuals and institutions face the constant challenge of updating and developing soft skills to keep up with the rapid changes in the labor market and the demands of different professions, requiring continuous training and learning
- Training Challenges and the Job Market: Individuals and institutions face the challenge of providing appropriate and effective training programs to develop soft skills, as many of these skills require intensive and ongoing training
- Evaluation Challenges: Individuals and institutions face difficulties in evaluating the level of soft skill development and identifying the areas that require more focus
When discussing the relationship between the learner and soft skills, this relationship is primarily manifested in their educational, cultural, and environmental experiences. Soft skills depend on psychological, social, cultural, and educational factors that individuals are exposed to throughout their lives. For instance, a good educational experience can help students develop soft skills such as effective communication, leadership, and teamwork, and the social and cultural environment in which a person grows up can encourage the development of these skills
Learners/students can improve their soft skills by focusing on developing and learning them, whether through practical experience, training courses, reading, study, or self-learning, with an emphasis on improving their communication, teamwork, critical thinking, time management, and coping with challenges and changes in personal and professional life
Some of the prominent models and examples that highlight the relationship between the learner/student and soft skills include
- “Learn to Learn” Program: A training program aimed at developing soft skills in students by teaching them critical thinking, self-learning, time management, effective communication, and teamwork
- “Life Skills Education” Project: A project that aims to develop life skills necessary for success in daily life, including soft skills such as effective communication, innovative problem-solving, teamwork, and self-management.
- “Knowledge Partnership” Program: A program designed to develop soft skills in students and youth, including leadership, critical thinking, teamwork, and coping with challenges
- “Social Entrepreneurship Pioneers” Program: A program that trains youth in soft skills important for social entrepreneurship, including innovation, management, marketing, and positive thinking
These projects and programs are examples of how soft skills can be developed in learners and demonstrate the importance of these skills in achieving personal, professional, and social success
Thus, learning is a continuous and systematic process that requires a variety of foundational and soft skills to ensure success. Research indicates that soft skills have a significant impact on the learning process, as they help enhance students’ abilities to understand academic subjects and learn more effectively. Therefore, it is essential to provide opportunities to develop soft skills in learners/students through training and guidance in a variety of life situations
Soft skills reflect the ability to learn. When a learner/student possesses a set of soft skills, they can think critically, solve problems effectively, and communicate and interact with others more efficiently. Soft skills enhance self-confidence and help develop innovative solutions to problems, leading to better academic, professional, and social achievements
