Introduction

As a medium of communication, scholarly publication is a complex process.  Writing for publication in high impact journals is a rather more demanding endeavor for academics particularly for “English as an additional language” (EAL) writers who are at a disadvantage compared to their native English writers’ counterparts. Yet, international publication is fundamental for scholars who aspire to be read and cited by their international peers as well to participate in knowledge production and dissemination. Additionally, as English has become the dominant language for publication of academic research due to globalization and most journals in international databases are published in English, publishing in a language other than English is to isolate oneself from the international community of scholars. Academic researchers are, therefore, under tremendous pressure to publish internationally in English. These writers are then prone to adhere to the requirements of international competitiveness. It should be noted, however, that international publication could be prevented by cognitive, social, physical, affective and linguistic barriers

Main Objectives of the Workshop

The overall objective of this webinar is to discuss the challenges faced by non-native English authors whilst publishing in highly influential journals and suggest solutions for them. To achieve this objective, some non-native English writers were invited to share their expertise on writing, referencing and publishing research

13:00-13:10: Opening Speech by Dr. Hanan Kichou & Dr. Sihem Salem

Dr. Sihem Salem

Sihem is a teacher of English at Setif 2 University. She holds a PhD from the department of education at the university of York and an AHEA fellowship certificate. She co-organised workshops as well as she participated in national and international conferences in UK and Germany. Her research interests include EFL education, global citizenship education, teacher education, critical pedagogy, experiential learning, and multilingualism

 Dr. Hanan Kichou

Hanan Kichou is an enthusiastic associate professor of higher education in the department of English language and literature at MLD, Setif 2 University, Algeria for more than 12 years. She received her PhD in Applied Linguistics and foreign language teaching from the University of Setif 2. Her primary research areas of interest include academic writing, genre and discourse analysis, English for research and publication, language planning and policy, and technology integration in learning. She has moderated and participated in many national and international conferences

13:10-13:15: Moderator: Dr. Amira Benabdelkader

Dr. Amira Benabdelkader

Amira Benabdelkader has been a senior lecturer and researcher at the Université Frères Mentouri Constantine 1 since December 2020, and the director of the American Corner Constantine since September 2022. She holds a PhD in Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics from the University of Southampton. She has organised and participated in conferences and other academic events in the UK, US, Algerian, Pakistan, Mexico, etc. She is also a reviewer in the Journal of Languages and in the EUROCALL conference. Her research interests are intercultural communication, culture negotiation, lingua franca communication (ELF and FLF), online language learning and English as a medium of instruction

13:15-14:25 Prof. Nadia Idri-Ahouari

Title: Making Impact through Scholarly Publishing: Focus on Journal Selection

A full professor with 18 years of experience at Bejaia University, and a project manager at 3ENL+, pioneers of English Teaching MOOC Design and Delivery for Higher Education Instructors at the Ministry of Higher education and Scientific research, Algeria. Nadia is also the project manager of Teaching English at Bejaia University for University teachers. She has been working to develop EMP-Bejaia (English for Medical Purposes) in the Faculty of Medicine at Bejaia University since 2021. Nadia has been working as a translator of all types of documents (Arabic-French-English) in the the Sub-Directorate of University and Research Partnership, Ministry of higher education and scientific research, Algeria and in charge of the translation bureau (Arabic/English) in the Global Institute of Arabic Renewal, Spain. She has many publications nationally and internationally (more than 60) and a rich contribution in many national and international conferences. In her university, she has been an active participant in most pedagogic and scientific tasks like teacher development and evaluation, doctoral training and mentoring, PRFU projects; conference chairing, a member of the quality assurance cell of the university, a member the Council of ethics and deontology of the University profession, a member of the “cellule d’accompagnement de sensibilisation, d’appui et de médiation » (CASAM), the founder and editor-in-chief of the“Journal of Studies in Language, Culture and society (JSLCS)

14:25-14:55 Dr. Salim Bouherar

Title: Getting Published: Reflections on my Journey

Salim Bouherar is an Assistant Professor at Setif University 2, Algeria. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Middlesex, UK. He participated in national and international conferences in Algeria, Columbia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and UK. His research interests include culture and idioms, language planning and policy, language and politics, critical pedagogy, and critical theory in language policy. He has published researches on communicative approach, idioms understanding and teaching, religion and culture, language planning and policy in Algeria and Arab World. He co-authored the book of “Algerian languages in education: conflicts and reconciliation”. He is also a reviewer in social semiotics and frontiers psychology journals, and an editor of a special issue

14:55-15:15 Dr. Hana Bohlala

Title: Skills of Dealing with Foreign References

Dr Hana is a university faculty member in higher education sector / Libya, a Lecturer in Accounting and Auditing, and Head of the Department of Financial and Administrative Sciences at the ‏Higher Institute of Tobruk. She has been teaching in higher education for more than ten years. She participated in several scientific, academic activities and conferences in Libya and the United States, as well as online Activities. She is interested in educational issues and working to participate in e-learning. She published some scientific and journalistic articles inside and outside Libya. She is interested in development issues, national and educational issues, charitable and voluntary work

14:55-15:15 Dr. Moustafa Amrate

Title: Navigating the publication process in a SCOPUS-indexed journal: Insights from my personal experience

Moustafa Amrate is a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics & TEFL at the Department of English, University of Biskra. He holds an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Biskra and a PhD in Education from the University of York, United Kingdom. His research interests revolve around second language speech and computer-assisted pronunciation training

15:15-15:25: Dr. Yara Shokry

Title: Two Heads are better than One: Online Peer Feedback to foster L2 Students’ Writing Skills

Yara is a lecturer at the Faculty of Education, Port Said University in Egypt. She is also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) in the UK. Yara Obtained her PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of York in 2021. Her area of research involve computer assisted language learning (CALL), second language writing, and peer feedback
