Abstract
This study investigated the role of the balanced scorecard (BSC) in enhancing the performance of hospitals in the Middle East. Valid responses to an online questionnaire were received from a total of 230 respondents from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, and Jordan. The results showed that 95.67 percent of the studied organizations applied a means of performance evaluation with 71 percent of them integrating both financial and non-financial measures in a balanced scorecard (BSC). While a majority of the organizations that had adopted the BSC indicated that their performances had improved since the adoption of the scorecard, many of them focused more on financial metrics and afforded the three other perspectives of the BSC less attention. Nevertheless, the study demonstrated that use of the BSC enhances the overall performances of health institutions.
